KU Contingent to Compete at Wildcat Open Saturday

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas track & field team will send a small group to compete at the Wildcat Open Saturday in Baldwin, Kan. The meet, hosted by Baker University, is slated to begin at 11 a.m. from Liston Stadium.

KU’s No. 2-ranked women will have several members in action Saturday. Alena Krechyk, who currently boasts the No. 4 hammer throw mark in the NCAA, will take part in the event beginning at 11 a.m. The senior, who will look to defend her Big 12 title next week at the conference championship meet, is one of only two collegians this season to turn in multiple throws of over 219 feet.

Freshman Anastasiya Muchkayev will also get one final tune-up before the league meet next weekend. Muchkayev holds marks in the both the shot put and discus that rank her among the top-25 in the NCAA’s West Region. She will begin her day Saturday in the shot put at approximately 1 p.m. and will return for the discus around 3 p.m.

On the men’s side, five Jayhawks will journey to Baldwin in hopes of improving their conference and regional rankings as the postseason quickly approaches. Sophomore Jonathan Miller will step into the discus ring at approximately 3 p.m. His season’s best throw of 54.22 meters (177’11”) ranks him at No. 28 in the West Region and eighth in the Big 12 standings.

On the track, Sam Jones and Kellum Schneider are slated to compete in the 800 meters at approximately 12:45 p.m., while Teddy Oteba will try to improve upon his time in the 400 meters at around 12:30 p.m.
