April 26, 2005

DALLAS –

Junior second baseman Jessica Moppin was named Big 12 Player of the Week for her performance April 18-24, the conference office announced Tuesday. The honor is Moppin’s first of her career at the University of Kansas.

Moppin led the Jayhawks to a 3-1 record last week, including KU’s first series sweep over a ranked team since 2001. The Olathe, Kan., native recorded a career-high 4-for-5 outing Saturday against No. 5 Oklahoma. She tallied four hits, including the game-winner in the bottom of the ninth in KU’s upset (5-4) of the second-place Sooners.

On Sunday, she hit a three-run home run in the first inning of the Jayhawks’ 4-1 victory over OU to complete their first conference sweep of the season.

Moppin also helped Kansas defeat Nebraska (2-0) on Wednesday. On the week, Moppin went 8-for-15, while compiling a .533 batting average. The Olathe South H.S. grad posted two home runs, 15 total bases, six RBI and a 1.000 slugging percentage in four contests.

On the season, Moppin is hitting .310 with eight home runs and is just one away from tying the school record for career homers (23).

Moppin and the Jayhawks will play a doubleheader today against Arkansas at 3 p.m. at Arrocha Ballpark.
