Jayhawks Fall to Baylor In Big 12 Tournament

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas fell to top-seeded Baylor, 4-0, in the Big 12 Women’s Tennis Championships Friday, ending the Jayhawks’ spring dual season.

The Bears (16-13) won the first four completed singles matches in straight sets to seal a semifinal berth, where they will face No. 5 seed Oklahoma State. KU finishes the 2013 season with an overall record of 11-10 (2-7 Big 12).

Baylor’s Jordaan Sanford defeated Kansas freshman Maria Jose Cardona, 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 2 spot, while BU’s Victoria Kisialeva beat junior Paulina Los, 6-2, 6-0, at the No. 3 position. At No. 5, freshman Anastasija Trubica fell to Maria Biryukova, 6-1, 6-0, and Jayhawk senior Victoria Khanevskaya lost to BU’s Alex Leatu, 6-1, 6-4, in the No. 6 match.

“We have a lot of maturing to do and we’re definitely excited about what the future holds for us come next year,” Kansas coach Amy Hall-Holt said. “We’re just trying to develop some of our top freshman and continue to grow and develop as a team.”

Singles was played first because of forecasted inclement weather. Individual Big 12 Tournament matches are not completed once the team match has been clinched.
