Bonds Leads Kansas Track & Field at Drake Relays

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Lauren Bonds highlighted the Kansas track & field performances Friday at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, placing sixth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:12.00. Only a handful of Jayhawks competed Friday at Drake and also at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa., with more scheduled for the weekend.

Bonds, a junior from Hutchinson, Kan., will now look to compete for the title in the 1,500 meters at Drake on Saturday.

At the Penn Relays, Nickesha Anderson just missed a spot in the finals of the women’s 100 meters, posting a time of 11.72 to finish with the 10th-best time of all the heats.

In the 110-meter hurdles prelims at Penn, Keith Hayes placed 16th out of 29 athletes with a time of 14.23. Teammate Keyen Porter was 21st after posting a time of 14:40.

The Kansas men’s 4×400-meter relay team of Hayes, Reggie Carter, Jarrell Rollins and Keron Toussaint had the 28th-best heat time at 3:14.23.

Back at Drake, Jonathan Edwards placed 22nd in the men’s javelin with a throw of 47.91 meters (157-02 feet).

In the women’s shot put, Stephanie Horton and Emily Reimer each recorded regional marks, with Horton placing 13th with a throw of 14.47 meters (47-05.75 feet) and Reimer taking 15th with a toss of 14.37 meters (47-01.75 feet).

Kirk Cooper finished in 17th place in the men’s pole vault after recording a jump of 4.90 meters (16-00.75 feet).

Dustin Turner took 12th in the men’s long jump, leaping 7.23 meters (23-08.75 feet).

Kansas’ horizontal jumpers along with Bonds will compete Saturday at the Drake Relays. On Sunday, select KU athletes will be competing in Lincoln, Neb., for the Nebraska Open.
