Finley Honored By Big 12

April 27, 2010

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Kansas freshman Mason Finley was named the Co-Male Big 12 Athlete of the Week, it was announced Tuesday by the league office.

Finley, a native of Salida, Colo., recorded the best mark of his collegiate career in the discus last weekend at the Triton Invitational in San Diego, Calif., where he was competing against several of the world’s best throwers, including Jason Young, who currently owns the top mark in the world for the 2010 outdoor year.

Finley threw a season-best 59.84m (196-4 ft.) to finish fifth overall and second among collegiate athletes at the Triton Invitational. With that mark, he currently sits in third on the NCAA descending order list, while ranking second in the Big 12 Conference. Finley also improved his standings on the Jayhawks’ all-time best performers list, as he is now one of only four athletes in school history to throw 196 ft.

Prior to the meet in San Diego, Finley had won three consecutive discus titles during the 2010 outdoor season, including victories at the prestigious Texas and Kansas Relays. He will compete in the event again this weekend at the Arkansas Twilight in Fayetteville, Ark., where he will also throw the shot put, another event in which he is ranked in the top 10 nationally.
