April 27, 2010

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

The Kansas softball team was named the overall winner of the 2009-10 Jayhawk CHAMPS competition, beating out 13 other KU Athletics teams in the annual competition.

CHAMPS, which stands for challenging athletes’ minds for personal success, is a friendly competition between Kansas Athletics’ sports teams and was designed by Assistant Athletics Director for student development and community relations Mike Harrity. The competition was constructed to appeal to student-athletes’ competitiveness and rewards those teams who encourage and participate in personal development opportunities as well as building camaraderie between all Jayhawk teams.

Teams have an opportunity to earn points throughout the academic year based on five categories: personal development, community outreach, team GPA, Jayhawks supporting Jayhawks and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) participation. The KU softball team racked up 2,896.2 points, nearly 1,000 more points than the runner-up.
