Kansas Basketball Honored at State Capitol

TOPEKA, Kan. – The University of Kansas women’s and men’s basketball teams were recognized in the State Senate, State House of Representatives and by Kansas Governor Sam Brownback at the capitol building Friday morning.
Present from the Kansas women’s team were Tania Jackson, CeCe Harper, Angel Goodrich and Carolyn Davis. Conner Teahan, Jeff Withey, Travis Releford and Jordan Juenemann represented the men’s team. Also in attendance and recognized throughout the visit was KU Director of Athletics Dr. Sheahon Zenger and Director of Operations Nicole Corcoran, who came to KU in 2009 after working as press secretary for former Kansas governor Kathleen Sebelius from 2002-09.
The first stop for the KU contingent was in the Senate where Douglas County state senator Marci Franciso introduced Proposal 1863 which honored both teams. The proposal described the women’s team overcoming adversity to advance to the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16 and the men’s overachieving success which won Kansas’ eighth-straight Big 12 regular-season title as the Jayhawks advanced to their 14th Final Four and the NCAA title game, finishing runner-up.
Following the Senate, the group went to the chambers of Mike O’Neal, the speaker of the Kansas House of Representatives. O’Neal then introduced a proposal to the House which, like the Senate’s, described the many achievements of both the KU women’s and men’s basketball teams during the 2011-12 season.
Governor Brownback’s office was decked out with KU signs, flags, jackets and neckties as the Jayhawk entourage visited with Brownback, posed for photos with him and his family and took questions from the media present.
