JOPLIN, Mo. – Junior Andrea Geubelle leaped to the NCAA’s best triple jump mark Friday as the Kansas track and field team competed at the Bill Williams/Bob Laptad Invitational in Joplin, Mo. In all, 11 Jayhawks and three relay teams claimed titles at the meet hosted by Missouri Southern State University, including sophomore Diamond Dixon who won both the 100 meters and 200 meters.

Geubelle, who saw her first competitive action in the triple jump in nearly a month, continued where she left off as she entered the day boasting the No. 2 mark in the NCAA this year. On her first attempt, the University Place, Wash. native hit a mark that measured out to 13.55 meters (44-05.50 ft.). The personal record jump not only earned her an easy victory in the event, but now gives her the best mark in the nation this year. The NCAA’s reigning indoor triple jump champion, Geubelle, is now No. 2 on the all-time school lists in the event.

Fellow 2012 indoor national champion Diamond Dixon also had a career-day, notching new personal bests in the 100 meters and 200 meters. Dixon kicked off her day by winning the 100-meter dash in a wind-aided time of 11.34. The Houston, Texas native’s time is the third-fastest in school history and moves her into the top 10 of the Big 12 rankings with the conference meet just two weeks away.

Dixon concluded her day with a win in the 200 meters. She crossed the finish line in 23.13, also winded-aided, to claim another victory and another new personal record. With both Friday finishes, Dixon now holds times that rank in the top-three on three all-time school performance lists (100 meters, 200 meters and 400 meters).

In the men’s high jump, Jonathan Fuller followed up his breakout performance last week at the Kansas Relays with a win in the event at Missouri Southern. The Dallas native became the first Jayhawk in over a decade to clear seven feet a week ago in Lawrence. While he finished his day Friday just an inch shy of his personal best, he picked up the first win of his collegiate career. On his third attempt he leaped over the 2.12 meter (6-11.50 ft.) bar to seal the victory and beat out teammates Nick Giancana and Nick Canton, who finished close behind at second and third place.

Demi Payne continued her outstanding season Friday afternoon in the women’s pole vault. The sophomore out of New Braunfels, Texas only fouled once in clearing her first four bars of the day. She then went on to vault over 4.20 meters (13-09.25 ft.) on her third attempt at height to notch a new outdoor personal best, which cemented her into a tie for first place. The mark moved Payne to No. 4 on the all-time school list, tying her with former Jayhawk All-American Kate Sultanova.

The men’s and women’s 4×100-meter relay teams returned to the track one week after each had memorable outings at the Kansas Relays last week. The women, who have broken the school record in the event twice this season, won their race in 45.15, just under three seconds in front of the runner-up finishing team. The men’s squad entered the day with the seventh-ranked time in the Big 12. The quartet passed the baton around in a new season-best time of 41.35 to seal the KU women’s and women’s 4×100-meter sweep.

Despite the windy conditions on the track, several members of the KU distance group had solid outings. A pair of freshman ran to a 1-2 finish in the women’s 1,500 meters. Ragan Allen and Sara Seiwald, both Oregon natives, finished the race in 4:52.64 and 4:57.40, respectively.

In the men’s 3,000-meter Steeplechase, Eric Dyson and Kaman Schneider also claimed the top two spots. Dyson, who led from start to finish, completed the race in a personal best 9:28.75 with Schneider not far behind, crossing the finish line in 9:40.67.

One other freshman distance specialist claimed Gold Friday as Evan Landes won the 5,000 meters. The Mulvane, Kan. native finished the 3.1-mile race in 14:56.63. Teammates James Wilson (15:03.57) and Josh Baden (15:13.19) placed second and third, respectively.

Other Jayhawks heading home from Joplin with wins were junior Paris Daniels in the 400 meters (55.39), sophomores Maddy Rich in the 800 meters (2:19.18) and Timmie Morris in the women’s 400-meter hurdles (1:04.42), freshman Michael Stigler in the men’s 400-meters (53.05) and both the men’s and women’s 4×400-meter relay teams.

There is much more action in store this week for Kansas track and field as the Jayhawks have two groups competing in California Saturday and Sunday. The throwers will be up against some of the nation’s best at the UCSD Triton Invitational Saturday in San Diego, while the distance group will be running at the Payton Jordan Invitational in Stanford, Calif.
