April 28, 2005

PHILADELPHIA, Penn. – DES MOINES, Ia. –

The University of Kansas track and field teams competed at two separate events Thursday. Junior Benson Chesang won the 5,000-meter run at the Penn Relays, while other Jayhawks competed at the Drake Relays.

Chesang, who was competing in just his second meet of the outdoor season, beat second place Martin Fagan of Providence by six seconds. Chesang’s time of 13:57.42 is good enough for fourth in the all-time KU record books. Last weekend, at the 78th Kansas Relays, Chesang shocked Memorial Stadium with a first place finish in the mile in his first race of the season.

Sophomore Abby Emsick finished fourth in the shot put Thursday with a season-best toss of 45-04.50. Two other Jayhawk throwers also competed at the Penn Relays.

Junior Denita Miller placed sixth in the javelin with a throw of 150-09, while senior Jen Widerstrom finished sixth in the hammer with an effort of 181-00.

KU also competed at the historic Drake Relays on Thursday. Freshman Colby Wissel placed seventh in the 5,000 with a season-best run of 14:15.29. Sophomore Tyler Kelly and freshman Mike Putzke placed 10th and 11th in the 10,000 with times of 30:32.02 and 30:47.21, respectively. It was the first time this season for the duo in the event.

The Jayhawk women’s 4×1600 relay team of Lauren Brownrigg, Angela Pichardo, Dena Seibel and Megan Manthe placed sixth in the event with a time of 20:10.26.

The Jayhawks will continue at the two meets all day on Friday and Saturday.
