Jayhawks Eliminated by Baylor in Big 12 Quarterfinals

April 28, 2006

WACO, Texas — Following a thrilling first-round victory over Colorado on Thursday night, the University of Kansas tennis team was bounced from the Big 12 Championships’ quarterfinals, 4-0, by top-seeded Baylor on Friday in Waco.

The Bears, ranked fifth in the nation, won the first four singles matches to eliminate eighth-seeded KU from contention in the dual, and therefore placing no significance on the final two in-progress singles matches and each of the remaining doubles contests.

Kansas tried to avenge its 6-1 loss to BU earlier this season in Lawrence, but Baylor, which fielded three ranked players in its top four positions, including defending NCAA singles champion and fifth-ranked Zuzana Zemenova, took each match in straight sets, ending the Jayhawks’ hopes of a trip to the Championships’ semifinals early on in the dual.

Following the setback, KU’s record stands 14-11, which is more wins than the program had produced in each of the previous two seasons combined (11). The Jayhawks, who entered the postseason as the nation’s 64th-ranked team, broke into the national poll early in the season, and never relinquished their spot.

KU will now await word on any further team or individual postseason berths. The announcement of the NCAA Team Tournament field will take place on Sunday night.
