KU's Gockel Named to Big 12 All-Tournament Team

April 28, 2009

LAWRENCE, Kan. – After claiming a sixth place individual finish at the 2009 Big 12 Championship this past weekend, Kansas junior Meghan Gockel has been named to the All-Tournament Team. This marks the third time that a Jayhawk golfer has received the honor since the conference was formed in 1996.

“I am so happy that Meghan was selected to the All-Tournament Team,” said head coach Erin O’Neil. “There aren’t many who work harder than she does in the classroom and on the golf course. She is definitely a great leader for our team and I am very proud of her accomplishments.”

Gockel shot a three-round total of 230 last weekend in Lubbock, Texas to help the Jayhawks claim a fifth place at the Big 12 Championship, their highest finish in program history. The Dallas native had the team’s low score in each round. Her tie for sixth place was the best performance by a Jayhawk at the Championship since Amanda Costner finished first in 2007.

Gockel’s selection marks the third time in school history that a Jayhawk has been named to the All-Tournament Team. Amanda Costner made the team in 2004 after finishing tied for seventh and in 2007 by finishing first.

On the course, Gockel has a 79.09 scoring average in 22 rounds this season. She has played in eight out of 11 events and claimed medalist honors at the Duramed Collegiate Invitational at Rio Verde in March.

Earlier this month, Gockel was named to the 2009 Academic All-Big 12 first team after posting a 4.0 grade-point average. Gockel – an accounting a finance major – was one of three women’s golfers in the league to achieve a 4.0 GPA. It marked the second straight year she has posted a perfect 4.0.
