Nate Barbee and Bryan Hackenberg both carded rounds of 73 to move the Kansas men’s golf team up the leaderboard to a tie for fifth place entering the final round of the Big 12 Championship at Prairie Dunes Country Club.

The team shot a round of 290, which marks its low round of the event, and is tied with in-state rival Kansas State entering the fourth and final round.

“This was as complete of a team effort as we have had in a long time,” said head coach Kit Grove. “All the guys did their part today and that is really important on a course that is this difficult.”

Barbee and Hackenberg both moved up eight spots on the individual leaderboard to 14th place after round three. Hackenberg finished his round strong with two birdies in his last three holes.

Senior Zach Pederson continued his solid play at the event with a third round 73 and will enter the final round tied for 10th place. Pederson, along with Barbee and Hackenberg, will attempt to become the fourth Jayhawk in the last four years to finish in the top-10 at the Big 12 Championship.

“I think it would be very cool for each of the guys to finish in the top-10 and make the All-Tournament team,” said Grove. “It is an accomplishment that puts you permanently in the record book and that is a great accomplishment for anybody.”

Seniors Andrew Storm and Walt Koelbel rebounded from rough opening days to fire their best rounds of the event. Storm carded a 73 and moved up nine spots on the leaderboard to a tie for 31st place entering the final round. Koelbel shot a 74 and is in 54th place.

The Jayhawks will be looking to earn its top-finish since it finished fourth at the Desert Shootout March 19-21. The team will also be looking to place three individuals in the top-20 for the first time since September 29-30 at the Cardinal Intercollegiate.

Oklahoma State will carry a three-stroke edge entering the final round over Colorado with 868 strokes. Bill Allcorn of Baylor sits atop the individual leaderboard after three rounds with 209 strokes.

The final round will be played on April 29 and can be tracked live at golfstat.com. Check back to kuathletics.com for a complete recap and results of the Big 12 Championship.
