Despite rallying for three hits and a run in the bottom of the sixth inning, Kansas softball’s efforts fell short as Wichita State defeated KU 4-1 in the first game of Wednesday’s non-conference doubleheader.

The second game of the twinbill between the Jayhawks and Shockers will begin at approximately 7:20 p.m.

With bases loaded, two outs and the potential game-winning run at the plate in the bottom of the sixth, Wichita State pitcher Kasha Kolb struck out Kansas’ Sara Ramirez to end the inning. Kolb struck out 12 Jayhawks during the contest, tying a season high.

Before Ramirez’s strike out, Kansas was able to plate one runner. Freshman Mariah Montgomery hit a single back up the middle to score freshman Alex Jones from first. Jones led off the inning with a bunt single.

KU managed five hits during the game, including a 2-for-3 effort from Montgomery to extend a four-game hit streak. Junior Brittany Hile and freshman Maggie Hull also recorded knocks in the contest for the Jayhawks.

Wichita State strung together three hits and a walk in the top of the fourth inning to score its first three runs. An RBI double in the next frame scored the Shockers’ fourth and final run.

Kansas pitcher Sarah Vertelka tossed the first four and 1/3 innings before junior Allie Clark threw the last two and 2/3 innings in hitless relief. She also fanned two batters.
