April 30, 2009

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Kansas Athletics held its Annual Jayhawk Senior and Scholar Banquet Wednesday evening at the Marriott Hotel in downtown Kansas City. Senior swimmers Maria Mayrovich and Danielle Herrmann were each honored with awards for their accomplishments in the pool and in the classroom.

Mayrovich was one of five student-athletes to receive the Senior Athletes of the Year award. Mayrovich broke the school’s 200 yard freestyle record this year at the NCAA Championships. She was also the swimming team’s top finisher at both the NCAA and Big 12 Championships this spring. In addition, Mayrovich was named the Big 12 Swimmer of the Week on Jan. 28, the second such honor of her career.

Herrmann was named the Robert Frederick Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year along with baseball’s Nick Faunce. Herrmann is a three-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team member and a 2008 Academic All-American. Not only was Herrmann a superb student, she was one of the Jayhawks best swimmers throughout her career. Herrmann was a two-time NCAA Championships qualifier and is the school record holder in both the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke events.

In addition to Herrmann and Mayrovich winning awards, senior diver Hannah McMacken was selected to be the senior athlete speaker.
