Kansas Travels to Oklahoma For Final Regular-Season Big 12 Road Series
April 30, 2010
LAWRENCE, Kan. –
In its final Big 12 regular-season road series, the Kansas softball team (19-30, 1-13 Big 12) travels to No. 12/10 Oklahoma this weekend, May 1-2. The series opens at 2 p.m. Saturday at the OU Softball Complex. Sunday the teams wrap up the weekend with a noon contest.
Live stats for both games will be available via Gametracker on the KU Athletics website at www.KUAthletics.com/softball.
Kansas is coming off its largest margin of victory since March 19 earlier this season following its 9-4 win versus Wichita State Wednesday evening. After its doubleheader split with the Shockers, KU is 19-30 overall heading into this weekend’s series, and 1-13 in Big 12 Conference games. Freshman Rosie Hull leads the team with a .375 batting average on the season but freshman Mariah Montgomery has come on strong for the Jayhawks as of late. Over the last eight contests, Montgomery paces the team hitting .480. She also leads Kansas during conference play with a .289 average. In the pitcher’s circle, junior Allie Clark owns a team-best 3.82 ERA and eight wins, including Wednesday’s victory over WSU.
Oklahoma is 37-10 overall, including 11-3 in the conference, following its 11-1 victory versus Oklahoma State Wednesday to extend a five-game winning streak. Five Sooners hit over .300 led by senior All-American Amber Flores’ .388 batting average. She has also scored a Big 12-leading 53 runs. Freshman Jessica Shults is second in the league with 57 RBIs with the help of 14 home runs. Freshman Keilani Ricketts sees the most time from the circle having tossed 188 and 2/3 innings with a 1.45 ERA, which ranks third in the conference. As a staff, OU owns a Big 12-best 1.59 ERA.
Head coach Patty Gasso is 727-239-2 in her 17th season at Oklahoma and 889-298-2 in her 21st year of coaching overall. Oklahoma returns 12 letterwinners from a year ago when the Sooners went 41-16 and claimed the Big 12 regular-season title.
The all-time series with Oklahoma dates back to 1978, Kansas’ first season of softball, with the Sooners leading 43-41. The Jayhawks split last year’s series at home, winning game two to snap a five-game winless streak versus OU. KU is 12-24 in games played in Norman and last won at Oklahoma in 1996.
Freshmen Approaching Single-Season Record Lists
As the end of the season draws near, a couple of Kansas freshmen are very close to cracking the top 10 of several KU single-season record lists. Outfielder/pitcher Alex Jones has collected 54 hits through 49 games and needs seven more to tie the 10th-most hits in a KU season. Shortstop Mariah Montgomery has a team-high 11 doubles, one shy of cracking the top-10 list, while her 23 walks are two base on balls short. Rosie Hull’s .375 batting average is currently tied for the sixth-best average in a season at Kansas.
The Jayhawks travel to Drake May 5 for its last non-conference games of the season. The first game of the twinbill is scheduled for 4 p.m. Kansas then returns home to Arrocha Ballpark May 8-9 for its final regular-season conference series.
