LAWRENCE, Kan. – Logan Philley, a three-time individual state champion who helped his team win four straight titles in the state of Texas, has signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) to continue his golf career at the University of Kansas. He joins Brock Drogosch (Windermere, Fla.), Chase Hanna (Mission Hills, Kan.), Connor Peck (Ankeny, Iowa), Danny Summers (Leawood, Kan.) and Jacques Wilson (Minnetonka, Minn.) in Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel’s first recruiting class.
Philley, who finished runner-up as a freshman at the UIL Class 2A Tournament before capturing an individual three-peat over the next three seasons, helped the Robert Lee Steers win four consecutive titles before enrolling at Odessa College, a perennial NJCAA golf power. Philley is finishing his sophomore year at Odessa and will have two years of athletic eligibility remaining when he arrives in Lawrence next fall.
“Logan’s a winner,” Bermel said. “He’s won at every level and helped every team he’s played on compete at the highest level. He brings a great deal of experience to the team and I know he’s very excited to continue his career at the University of Kansas.”
Philley recently logged a top-10 finish at the NJCAA District 2 Championship in Dennis, Texas, to help the Wranglers capture the team crown and qualify for the NJCAA National Championship at the Rawls Course in Lubbock, Texas, May 14-18. Philley had a 74.15 stroke average through 10 events and carded 84 birdies this season. Philley’s highest finish this season was second at the Odessa College Invite last fall, when he finished two shots out of first place and shot a season-best 67 (-5) in the opening round.
Kansas finished its first regular season under Bermel last week with an eighth-place finish at the Big 12 Championship at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan. The Jayhawks were in third place after the opening round and finished eight shots out of fifth, behind a top-10 finish from All-Big 12 Tournament Team member Chris Gilbert. Gilbert, a senior from Simi Valley, Calif., will likely make his second career NCAA Regional appearance when the field is announced next week, also qualifying for postseason play in 2011.
