No. 12/10 Oklahoma Tops Jayhawk Softball

Freshman Mariah Montgomery went 2-for-3 from the batter’s box but the Kansas softball team was shut out for the second-straight game as No. 12/10 Oklahoma defeated KU 7-0 Sunday in the Jayhawks’ final regular-season conference road game.
OU managed two runs in the bottom of the first before Kansas’ defense shut down the Sooners over the next four innings. Unfortunately, Oklahoma unloaded for five runs on five hits and three walks in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Kansas fell to 19-32 overall and 1-15 in Big 12 games, while Oklahoma improved to 39-10, including 13-3 in league play.
Montgomery tallied KU’s only two hits of the game, while junior pitcher Allie Clark and freshman center fielder Alex Jones each reached base on four balls. OU out-hit the Jayhawks 12-2 during the game.
Clark started in the circle versus the Sooners for the second-straight game. She held Oklahoma to seven hits through the first five innings before OU batted through the order in the sixth. Senior Sarah Vertelka entered the game for Clark to get the final out.
In the bottom of the first inning, KU retired OU’s first two batters to start the game but the Sooners came back with a walk and three straight singles to put its first two runs on the scoreboard.
The Jayhawks travel to Drake on Wednesday, May 5 for a doubleheader in its final non-conference games of the season. The twinbill is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
