May 4, 2005

LAWRENCE, Kan. – University of Kansas track and field senior Kim Clark was recently awarded an NCAA postgraduate scholarship. The Elkhorn, Neb., native was given $7,500 towards postgraduate studies for her outstanding work on the track and in the classroom.

Clark is a biochemistry major and owns a perfect 4.0 grade point average.

The NCAA awarded 56 postgraduate scholarships to 28 male student-athletes and 28 female student athletes who participated in a winter sport. In addition to the winter sport postgraduate scholarship honorees, the NCAA also awards 114 postgraduate scholarships to student-athletes participating in fall and spring sports.

To qualify for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship, a student-athlete must have an overall grade point average of 3.200 (on a 4.000 scale) or its equivalent and must have performed with distinction as a member of the varsity team in the sport in which the student-athlete was nominated. The student-athlete must have behaved, both on and off the field, in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete, the institution and intercollegiate athletics. The student-athlete also must intend to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a full-time or part-time graduate student.

“Kim is very deserving of this award,” Kansas head track and field coach Stanley Redwine said. “She has maintained a 4.0 grade point average in biochemistry, while continuing to excel on the track.”

Clark, a 2004 Academic All-American, holds the University of Kansas record in the 600-yard run with a time of 1:20.38. She was the Big 12 Indoor Champion in the 600 in 2003, and also ranks second all-time at KU with a mark of 2:07.13 in the outdoor 800-meter run.
