Area Third Graders Participate in Kansas Kids Fitness and Safety Day at KU

LAWRENCE, Kan. – More than 500 Lawrence area third graders participated in Kansas Kids Fitness and Safety Day at KU’s Anschutz Pavilion Friday morning.

Sponsored by the Governor’s Council on Fitness, local fitness guru Don “Red Dog” Gardner kicked off the statewide event with a series of calisthenics for the kids in attendance. From there the students participated in 18 different stations ranging from relay races to parachutes. The Lawrence Fire and Safety Department had an interactive station where they taught the participants how to maneuver through their home in case of fire.

Kansas Kids Fitness and Safety Day is a statewide event held every year on the first Friday in May. The event focuses on increasing physical activity and safety awareness among third grade students in Kansas. Nearly 18,000 students participate each year at more than 40 sites across the state.
