Jayhawks Set New School Record, Earn Regional Marks at Arkansas Twilight

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

The <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>University of Kansas track and field team performed well at the Arkansas Twilight Invitational Friday night in Fayetteville, Ark. KU saw junior Ashley Brown set a new school record and five other Jayhawks either register new regional marks or improve their previous qualifying standards.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

Brown set a new Kansas record in the women’s 100-meter hurdles, finishing third in a 13.31 seconds. The mark bests the previous school mark held by Jennie Wonder by one one-hundredths of a second. Brown had previously held a season-best mark of 13.33 seconds.

Also in the hurdles, junior Julius Jiles established a new career-best time in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing second in 13.85 seconds. Jiles had run 13.89 at the Kansas Relays and now ranks third in the Big 12 Conference in the event.

Junior Matt Baysinger earned his first regional mark of the season, finishing second in the 800-meter run in 1:50.04. The time represents a new personal best for Baysinger. Senior Clif Mitchell missed a regional mark by 49 one-hundredths of second, finish in fourth in 1:50.89.

Sophomore Victoria Howard added a regional mark in the 200-meter dash, winning the event in 23.45 seconds. The mark is the third-fastest 200-meter dash time in Kansas history. Howard already owns a regional mark in the 100-meter dash.

Senior Eric Babb finished second the long jump, clearing 25-01.25 (7.65m). Babb currently sits in second in the Big 12 Conference standings in the event, trailing only teammate Barrett Saunders.

Senior Laura Gjerde 12-06 (3.81m) to improved her regional qualifying mark and finish third in the women’s pole vault. Freshman Jordan Scott placed second in the men’s pole vault, matching his season-best mark of 17-00.75 (5.20m).

Kansas now heads to Lincoln, Neb., to compete in the Big 12 Outdoor Championships. The Championships run from May 10-12 at Ed Weir Stadium. Check back with kuathletics.com for all the information and results from the 2007 Big 12 Outdoor Championships.
