Jones Throws One-Hitter as Kansas Edges Drake 2-1

Freshman pitcher Alex Jones limited Drake to just one hit while five different Jayhawks collected hits for the Kansas softball team as KU edged the Bulldogs 2-1 in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday.

The nightcap of the teams’ doubleheader will begin at approximately 6 p.m.

With the win, Kansas improved to 20-32 overall while Drake dropped to 30-19.

Tied 1-1 through two innings, sophomore Marissa Ingle hit a bases loaded sacrifice fly to centerfield to plate freshman Mariah Montgomery in the top of the third. The run ultimately proved to be the game-winner.

Drake stranded a runner in the bottom of the third inning and did not put another runner on base again until the final inning as KU retired 10-straight Bulldog batters. Jenna DeLong recorded Drake’s lone hit of the contest, a double in the second frame.

Jones tossed all seven innings of the victory. The freshman struck out four batters and walked three as she improved to 6-9 from the circle. She also scored the Jayhawks’ first run in a wild first inning. Jones reached second base to lead off the the frame after a throwing error by Drake’s pitcher. On the next play, freshman Rosie Hull drew another DU error allowing Jones to score.

In addition to her single in the seventh, Montgomery reached base on balls twice during the contest to crack the top 10 of KU’s single-season walks list. She is tied for the No. 9 spot with 25 walks.

Freshman Julie Jenkins earned her first collegiate hit in the contest during her first at bat of the season. Her short blooper between the left fielder and third baseman in the fourth dropped for a single.
