KU Leads No. 2 Texas 2-1 in the Eighth Inning as Game Two Suspended

LAWRENCE, Kan. – With the Jayhawks leading 2-1 and one out in the bottom of the eighth inning, play was suspended in Saturday’s baseball game between Kansas and Texas due to lightening and rain in the Lawrence, Kan., area.

The game will resume on Sunday at 11 a.m. before Sunday’s scheduled series finale, which will begin at noon. In game three, the Jayhawks will send junior right-handed pitcher Kodiak Quick (9-5) to the mound to oppose UT’s Adrian Alaniz (3-2). The game will be televised live on ESPNU and can be seen on replay on ESPN2 at 6 p.m. (CST).

Kansas took game one of the series on Friday night by a score of 5-2.

In Saturday’s contest, the Longhorns took the first lead of the night as nine-hole hitter Robby Hudson reached on an error to lead off the top of the third inning and came around to score on a RBI single from centerfielder Drew Stubbs.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Jayhawks responded with a run of their own on junior first baseman Jared Schweitzer’s sixth home run of the season. With two out and no one on base, Schweitzer crushed a pitch over the wall in left field. The long ball marked the 22nd consecutive game in which the Sherwood Park, Alberta, native has hit safely, a new KU school record.

Kansas captured the lead for the first time in the contest at 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning as freshman third baseman Erik Morrison delivered a clutch RBI single with two out.

Kansas starter Mike Zagurski took the hill for the eighth inning, but gave way to closer Don Czyz after recording the first out of the frame. Zagurski pitched brilliantly in the contest; tossing 7 1/3 innings and yielding only one unearned run on five this while striking out six.

The game came entered a weather delay in the bottom of the eight with one out and Schweitzer at the plate and was suspended just over an hour later.
