Jayhawks Compete Well at Ward Haylett Invitational

MANHATTAN, Kan. –
In their final tune-up before the Big 12 Championships, the University of Kansas men’s and women’s track and field teams were in Manhattan, Kan., on Saturday participating in the Ward Haylett Invitational. The meet, hosted by Kansas State, saw several strong performances and three new NCAA regional qualifiers from the Jayhawks.
Competing in the in 800-meter run, senior Angela Pichardo finished second in a time of 2:09.77. Her result gave her a second place finish and beat the regional mark of 2:09.80. In the men’s 800-meter race, sophomore Matt Baysinger regionally qualified as well with his time of 1:49.83. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
Also qualifying for the Midwest Regional Championships was junior Janiece Gatson. Her time of 1:00.74 in the 400-meter hurdles was good for second place in addition to the regional mark.
Cortney Jacobs, Abby Emsick and Alicia McGregor all took home victories in their respective events. Jacobs and Tiffany Bradley finished 1-2 in the 400-meter dash with Jacobs posting a seasonal best of 55.73. Also having a seasonal best was Emsick, whose toss of 176-4 in the discus gave her the win. McGregor beat the field in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:22.09.
Junior Cody Roberts had a busy day in the throws competitions, finishing second in the discus (179-10) as well as fourth in the hammer (174-10).
Senior Denita Young took second in the javelin with a throw of 162-2, the furthest throw this year for the Liberal, Kan., native.
Senior Tiffany Cherry ran a time of 11.86 in the 100-meter dash, good for second in the race as well as a seasonal best. Sophomore Ashley Brown was the runner-up in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 14.19.
The two teams will now turn their focus to the Big 12 Outdoor Championships in Waco, Texas, beginning Friday, May 12. The three-day meet will be hosted by Baylor University.
