No. 23 Kansas 8, Wichita State 3

May 6, 2009

Kansas Head Coach Ritch Price

On the win:

“It’s a great win on the road. Obviously it’s a rivalry game and it’s the first time we’ve won here since 2005 when (we) had a really good team. It feels good to go to Oklahoma on the weekend, win a series on the road, and then travel down here on Wednesday and win again tonight. We played really well in every phase of the game. Earlier in the season we couldn’t pitch on the road, and now we’re starting to pitch better on the road. It’s transitioned into wins for us.”

On freshman pitcher Lee Ridenhour:

“He got behind in the count when they hit the two-run homer off of him, but he did a nice job of going back out, throwing strikes, and letting us play defense. I was really pleased for him. It was a hostile environment for him tonight. He ran his mouth a little bit the first time (against Wichita State) in the newspaper when he was really excited about his performance. He’s grown up and he’s more mature now.”

On junior second baseman Robby Price:

“It took a couple runs off the board, no doubt about it. Especially that double play ball that was lined at him when he made the backhand sliding catch. That allowed (Lee) Ridenhour and our bullpen to pitch to contact and reduce the number of outs it took to get to the ninth inning. He was a special player tonight with that glove in his hand.”

On freshman Tony Thompson’s performance:

“He’s absolutely special. He’s the reigning Big 12 Player of the Week and he’s off to the start of going back-to-back if it carries over to this weekend. He’s putting up numbers that give him a legitimate chance to be an All-American.”
