KU Downs No. 2 Texas 2-1 to Capture Series

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Freshman third baseman Erik Morrison collected a clutch RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning to plate the game-winning run as the Jayhawks defeated No. 2 Texas, 2-1, in second game of a three-game series at Hoglund Ballpark. The game was suspended late Saturday night and completed prior to the start of Sunday’s series finale.
The win improves KU’s overall mark this season to 33-21 and 8-11 in Big 12 play, while Texas falls to 38-11 and 13-9 in league action.
In the contest, the Longhorns took the first lead as nine-hole hitter Robby Hudson reached on an error to lead off the top of the third inning and came around to score on a RBI single from centerfielder Drew Stubbs.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Jayhawks responded with a run of their own on junior first baseman Jared Schweitzer’s sixth home run of the season. With two out and no one on base, Schweitzer crushed a pitch over the wall in left field. The long ball marked the 22nd consecutive game which the Sherwood Park, Alberta, native has hit safely, a new Kansas school record.
Kansas captured the lead for the first time in the contest at 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning as Morrison delivered a clutch RBI single with two out. Kansas starter Mike Zagurski took the hill for the eighth inning, but gave way to closer Don Czyz after recording the first out of the frame. Zagurski (5-3) captured the win after pitched brilliantly in the contest; tossing 7 1/3 innings and yielding only one unearned run on five this while striking out six.
The game came entered a weather delay in the bottom of the eight with one out and Schweitzer at the plate and was suspended just over an hour later. On Sunday morning, the game was resumed and the Longhorns managed to get a pair of base runners with only one out against Czyz. UT’s third baseman David Maroul stepped to the plate in the next at bat and rocketed a pitch to left center field, which KU center fielder Matt Baty was able to haul in on a diving catch. The next batter grounded out to to shortstop Ritchie Price to end the game.
Kansas and Texas will conclude the three-game series on Sunday with a noon match-up at Hoglund Ballpark. The game can be seen live on ESPNU and will be aired on tape delay at 6 p.m. (CST).
