Powers Shoots 80 In First Round Of NCAA West Regional

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>LINCOLN, Calif. – Kansas sophomore Emily Powers, playing in the NCAA West Golf Regional as an individual, opened up the tournament shooting an eight-over par 80 on Thursday.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

Powers is one of three individual qualifiers for the event. She played with Mallory Blackwelder of Kentucky and Danielle Cvitanov of San Franscisco. Cvitanov shot a one-over 73, while Blackwelder carded a 75.

After early round struggles, Powers closed the day strong recording five straight pars to finish the round. She recorded two birdies, three bogeys, two double-bogeys and one triple bogey on the day.

The tournament will continue with 18 holes on Friday and the final round on Saturday.

Twenty one teams and three individuals are competing in the three-day event for eight team spots and two individual spots for the NCAA Championships. The Regional tournament is taking place at the Lincoln Hills Golf Club just outside of Sacramento, Calif.
