Kansas Track & Field Lands 19 Jayhawks on 2007 Academic All-Big 12 Teams

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

The University of Kansas track and field teams posted 19 of its members on the 2007 Academic All-Big 12 Track and Field Teams. The women’s team placed 11 members on the squad while the men had eight recipients. As a team, KU led the conference with six student-athletes with a perfect 4.00 GPA.

On the men’s team, seniors Eric Babb (Secondary Education/Math), Mark Gdowski (Microbiology) and Cody Roberts (Exercise Science) received Academic All-Big 12 First Team distinction for the third-straight year while senior Adrian Ludwig (Sports Management) earned a spot on the Academic All-Big 12 First team for the second-consecutive year.

Junior Egor Agafonov (Undecided) can now add 2007 Academic All-Big 12 First Team to his growing list of accolades while sophomore Eric Fattig was one of six KU student-athletes to post a perfect 4.00 GPA. Fattig is majoring in Engineering. To make the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, a student-athlete must maintain a 3.20-plus GPA.

Juniors Paul Hefferon (Business) and Colby Wissel (Business) both were honored with spots on the Academic All-Big 12 Second Team. The juniors, both of whom were 2006 All-Americans in cross country, maintained a GPA over 3.00.

On the women’s squad, 10 student-athletes, including five with 4.00 GPAs, were selected to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team. Seniors Abby Emsick (Nursing), Janiece Gatson (Journalism), Laura Major (Business) were selected to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team for the third-straight year. Emsick received 4.00 GPA distinction for the second time. Among other upperclassmen joining the three were senior Melissa Moody (Sports Management), named for the second-straight year and another KU student-athlete with a 4.00 GPA, juniors Ashley Brown (Exercise Science) and Libby Harmon (Political Science).

The sophomore class was also well represented on the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, as Sha’Ray Butler (Human Biology), Megan James (Exercise Science), Emily Reimer (Architectural Engineering) and Zlata Tarasova (Undecided) were recognized. In fact, James, Reimer and Tarasova all posted 4.00 GPAs.

Senior Laura Gjerde (Pre-Physical Therapy) was the lone Jayhawk woman on the Academic All-Big 12 Second Team.

In all, the Big 12 Conference named 275 to the 2007 Academic All-Big 12 Track & Field Teams. To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his/her team’s scheduled contests.

The Jayhawks head to the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships Friday-Sunday at the Ed Weir Track in Lincoln, Neb.
