LAWRENCE, Kan. — Defensive end Jermial Ashley became the fifth player from the 2005 Kansas football team to join the NFL as he signed a free agent contract with the Cleveland Browns on Monday. Former KU teammate Charlton Keith signed a deal with Cleveland last week.

Ashley, a native of Fort Worth, Texas, was a second-team All-Big 12 selection in 2005 after starting all 12 games for the Jayhawks. He collected 16 total tackles, including three tackles-for-loss and one quarterback sack. He finished second on the team with six quarterback hurries.

The other four members of KU’s football team that signed free agent contracts include Keith (Cleveland Browns), Nick Reid (Kansas City Chiefs), Charles Gordon (Minnesota Vikings) and Mark Simmons (San Diego Chargers).
