Kansas Drops Midweek Contest to SMS

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Junior Jared Schweitzer connected on his seventh home run of the season and extended his school-record hitting streak to 24 games, but it was not enough as the University of Kansas baseball team fell to SMS, 15-6, on Wednesday at Hammons Field in Springfield, Mo.
The loss drops KU’s overall record this season to 33-23, while SMS improves to 17-29 on the year — including a 4-0 mark against teams from the Big 12.
The Jayhawks and starting pitcher Tyson Corley did not get off to the start they wanted in the game, as the Bears were able to push across two runs in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run single from catcher Matt Weglarz.
Senior catcher Sean Richardson got KU on the board in the top of the second inning with a RBI single.
SMS took control of the game as it chased Corley in the bottom of the second inning by batting around to plate five runs and open a 7-1 advantage. Corley lasted only 1 1/3 innings and allowed six runs on four hits, while walking two and hitting a pair of batters.
The Bears tacked three runs onto their lead in the bottom of the third inning to take a 10-1 advantage.
Junior outfielder A.J. Van Slyke connected on his 12th home run of the season, a solo shot to center field, to cut the SMS lead to 10-2 in the top of the fourth.
After the Bears were able to push across two runs in the bottom of the fourth, Schweitzer lead off the fifth inning with a solo home run high over the wall in left field.
Senior Travis Dunlap doubled in a pair of runs for KU in the top of the seventh inning as the Jayhawks tallied three runs to narrow the gap to 12-6.
SMS tallied a run on a solo home run off the bat of right fielder Jake Manning in the bottom of the seventh and pushed across two more in the eighth frame to post the final score.
Kansas returns to Big 12 play this weekend as it travels to Columbia, Mo., to battle Border Showdown rival Missouri in a three-game series.
