The Jayhawks improve to 26-28 overall.

Kansas broke a 1-0 game open in the third inning on Afenir’s second grand slam of the season, and seventh homer of the year. The inning started with Ellrich’s first hit of the day, a sharp single to center. After a sacrifice and a pair of walks, junior Erik Morrison gave KU a 2-0 lead with a bases loaded walk.

Afenir made the Cougars pay with a line shot over the wall in left field to give Kansas a 6-0 advantage.

After CSU tallied a pair of runs in the fourth, KU came back with single runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth. Freshman Robby Price recorded an RBI ground out to score Ellrich from third, while Morrison collected his team-leading 41st run batted in on a solo home run to left center.

That was more than enough support for the Jayhawk pitching staff. Junior Zach Ashwood evened his record at 4-4 by allowed two runs on three hits over five innings. The junior lefty walked one and struck out a pair of Cougars.

Junior Hiarali Garcia pitched the final two innings for KU.

Morrison scored three of KU’s eight runs, while Ellrich went 2-for-2 with two runs scored.

Kansas scored 10 unanswered runs to back Nick Czyz and Ryotaro Hayakawa in the first game. Junior John Allman led the way, going 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two runs batted in.

The Jayhawks will complete the three-game series with Chicago State at 11 a.m. Sunday at Hoglund Ballpark.
