Jayhawk Rowers Complete Day One at 2006 Aramark South/Central Region Sprints

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – The Kansas rowing team completed day one at the 2006 Aramark South/Central Region Sprints in Oak Ridge, Tenn., on Saturday.

The day’s events began with the heats. Kansas took third in the First Novice Eight with a time of 7:14.6 behind No. 6 Michigan State (6:59.1) and Indiana (7:06.4). Kansas finished fourth in the Second Varsity Eight with a time of 7:24.9, and fifth in the First Varsity Eight, with a time of 7:18.8. Kansas’ First Varsity Four boat took sixth with a time of 8:03.7, which sent it directly to Final “C” on Sunday.

The Jayhawks next competed in the Semifinals and Repechages. The First Novice Eight boat notched a fourth place time of 7:30.45 in front of Iowa (7:32.43) and Ohio State (7:57.60) in the Repechage. The First Novice Eight boat will next compete in Final “B” against in-state rival Kansas State, No. 10 Notre Dame, No. 19 Central Florida, Iowa and North Carolina.

The Second Varsity Eight Semifinals saw Kansas take third with a time of 7:39.08 before Indiana’s 7:41.40, but behind Iowa (7:33.10) and Cincinnati (7:37.43). The third-place finish sends Kansas to Final “C” against North Carolina, Cincinnati, Miami, Iowa and Kansas State.

The First Varsity Eight boat comprised of Katie Brosious, Jennifer Ebel, Lindsey Miles, Kris Lazar, Tiffany Jeffers, Alexis Boston, Kara Boston, LlynnAnn Laugesen and Kathryn Ault, finished strong earning a second place time of 7:03.42, just behind Miami’s time of 6:59.80. This sends the Jayhawks to Final “C” to compete against conference rivals Texas and Kansas State, as well as Miami, Clemson and Indiana.

“It was a good, but tough day of racing,” Kansas head coach Rob Catloth said. “I saw high-level rowing and good challenges. We’re going to finish as high as we can in the [Central] region tomorrow.”
