Jayhawks Complete Sweep of Chicago State

Sophomore Buck Afenir went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, while John Allman and Kyle Murphy each had a pair of hits as the University of Kansas completed a four-game sweep of Chicago State Sunday with a 15-4 triumph at Hoglund Ballpark.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
The Jayhawks improve to 27-28 overall.
Once again, KU’s offense was dominant as the Jayhawks scored 15 runs and pounded out 13 hits against the Cougars. Afenir led the charge, collecting an RBI double in the first inning and a solo home run in the fifth.
However, the Jayhawks piled on eight runs in the sixth inning to earn their third mercy-rule victory of the weekend. During the bottom of the sixth, KU sent 12 hitters to the plate and broke open a 6-3 game.
Five different KU players had RBIs in the inning, including pinch hitter Eric Snowden, who had a two-run double down the left field line. Ten different Jayhawks had hits in the game.
Sophomore lefty Andy Marks allowed a pair of earned runs over five innings and struck out six to improve to 5-6 on the season. Marks’ six strikeouts gives him 90 for the season, which sets a KU single-season high by a sophomore.
Freshmen Max Ellenbecker and Thomas Marcin pitched the final two innings for the Jayhawks.
Kansas will look to qualify for the Big 12 Tournament next weekend in a three-game showdown with Nebraska, beginning at 7 p.m. Friday at Hoglund Ballpark. Pending outcomes Sunday, the Jayhawks sit in ninth-place and are one game out of a postseason birth.
