Eighteen Jayhawks Named Academic All-Big 12

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Eighteen Jayhawks have been named to the 2009 Academic All-Big 12 Men’s & Women’s Track & Field Teams, the league office announced Wednesday.
Among those honored, three (Emily Reimer, Lauren Bonds and Jareb Stallbaumer) were nominated with a 4.00 grade point average.
Reimer, a senior architectural engineering major from Wichita, Kan., earned first team honors for the third consecutive year, making it a clean sweep for her career.
Bonds, a junior political science & international studies major and Hutchinson, Kan., product, is now a two-time first team selection.
Stallbaumer, a sophomore pre-pharmacy major from Wetmore, Kan., is a first team selection in his first year eligible for the honor.
Five other Jayhawks women joined Bonds and Reimer on the first team. It marked the third selection for junior Megan James and the second time on the team for junior Kelsey Erb, while junior Elizabeth Beisner and sophomores Abby Jones and Amanda Miler each made their first appearance on the team.
On the men’s side, senior Levi Huseman and sophomore Cooper Merrill accompanied Stallbaumer on the first team. Huseman, a Secondary Ed-Chemistry major, was named to the team for the second time, while Merrill earned his first selection.
Five Kansas men and three Jayhawk women were second-team selections. For the men, junior Jacob Breth was All-Big 12 for the second time, while seniors Jonathan Edwards and Patrick McGowan, junior Kirk Cooper and sophomore Alex Carey are all first-time members. For the women, senior Sha’Ray Butler received the award for the third time, senior Hayley Harbert was a second-time selection and junior Danielle Hayes earned the honor for the first time.
Nominated by each institution’s director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the men’s track & field academic all-league squad consisted of 96 first team members combined with 36 on the second team, while the women had 114 first team recipients and 32 student-athletes on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his/her team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
The Jayhawks are in Lubbock, Texas, for the 2009 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships, taking place Friday through Sunday at the Terry & Linda Fuller Track.
