KU’s Powers To Compete In Duramed FUTURES Golf Event In Kansas City

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas junior Emily Powers will tee off in the Duramed FUTURES Golf Tour’s Mercedes-Benz of Kansas City Golf Championship in Leawood, Kan. beginning Friday. The three-day, 54-hole tournament will take place at the Leawood South Country Club.

Powers, the only amateur in the field, led the Jayhawks with a 76.45 scoring average this past season. She claimed medalist honors at the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational and posted four top-10 finishes on the year. She was KU’s top individual finisher in seven of 11 events.

Last summer Powers qualified for the U.S. Open and the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championships.

Powers will tee off on the first hole at 8 a.m. along with professionals Alexandra Braga and Santie Koch.

Former Jayhawk Amanda Costner is also in the field. Costner, who was an All-Big 12 First Team selection in 2006 and 2007, will tee off on the 10th hole at 12:40 p.m. Friday.

The tournament is in its third year. The Duramed FUTURES Tour is considered the “Road to the LPGA” and since 1999 it has been designated as the LPGA’s developmental tour. More than 500 Duramed FUTURES Tour alumnae have gone on to earn LPGA membership.
