Jayhawks Take First Game of Twin Bill with Alabama A&M, 19-3

Freshman Jordan Brown collected his first career homer and had five RBIs, while Alex DeLeon and Jake Marasco each collected four more runs batted in as Kansas cruised to their second straight victory in their non-conference weekend set with Alabama A&M, 19-3 in seven innings Saturday afternoon at Hoglund Ballpark.

With the win, Kansas improved to 24-27, while the Bulldogs fell to 10-35. The Jayhawks scored 19 runs in a game against a Division I opponent for the first time since a 19-7 win over Missouri State on April 18, 2006.

Four different Jayhawks collected two hits in the game, while Alex DeLeon and Brown hit three-run homers. As a team, Kansas recorded nine extra base hits, including three triples.

In all, 11 different Kansas players recorded base hits, including outfielder Taylor Hart, catcher Thomas Hougland and outfielder Carlo Ramirez each recorded the first of their careers. Senior pitcher T.J. Walz collected a pinch hit single in his first collegiate at bat, while senior pitcher Wally Marciel played two innings at first base.

Sophomore righty Tanner Poppe pitched four scoreless innings to record his third victory of the season. Poppe allowed three hits and tallied six strikeouts in the game.

KU and Alabama A&M will play the second game in the doubleheader at approximately 5 p.m.
