Kansas Big 12 Track & Field Championship Quotes

Day Two – May 16, 2009

Head Coach Stanley Redwine

On Brian Bishop’s third-place finish in the discus:
“I thought it was really good for Brian to get third. We always knew that he could do it. Coach Kokhanovsky has done a really good job with him, and Brian stepped up and did a great job.”

On Nickesha Anderson qualifying for the 100-meter and 200-meter finals:
“When the competition is on, Nickesha steps up to the competition. We’re definitely excited about that. She thrives on competition, and she did a really good job today. Tomorrow she has both the 100 and 200 finals, and she is also in the 4×100, so she has a big day tomorrow.”

On the athletes that qualified for Sunday’s finals:
“For those that qualified, I thought they did an excellent job. They stepped up. Their minds were made up, they wanted to go out and compete, and they did a great job competing. They were not to be denied in anything. In order for the team to do better, we need more of it. They stepped up and did an excellent job, and that’s what we’re looking for.”

On the goals for Sunday:
“We definitely need everyone to step up to the things that they are supposed to do. Some events we expected people to qualify for the finals and they didn’t, and some other events we thought they were going to do well and they did. We’re just about where we thought we would be, and we just have to go out and compete.”

Brian Bishop – Men’s Discus Third-Place Finisher

On what it means to get third place at the Big 12 Championships:
“I finally stepped up. I had been struggling all season. It was a really awesome experience. It came on the last throw; I was sitting in eighth and came all the way up to third. I knew what I had to do. Me and my coach, Andy (Kokhanovsky) really focused on what I had to do for that last throw. I relaxed and let it go, and it was a really great experience.”

On how his Big 12 performance prepares him for Regionals:
“Knowing that my regional qualifying marks were pretty good, now I have an extremely good mark coming into it. I feel a lot more confident going into it knowing that I have a better mark and I’ve done what I need to do to make it to Nationals. It’s a really good and confident feeling.”
