May 18, 2009

OKLAHOMA CITY –

Kansas senior catcher Buck Afenir has been named Big 12 Player of the Week for the week of May 18. Afenir becomes the second Jayhawk position player to be honored on the conference’s weekly awards.

Afenir, a senior from Escondido, Calif., led the Kansas offensive attack, going 6-for-11 (.545) as KU took a series from No. 11 Kansas State over the weekend. The senior backstop recorded a career high four hits in Saturday’s 9-3 triumph over the Wildcats, including a two-run homer to break the game open. On Sunday, Afenir went 2-for-3 with another two-run round-tripper and a sacrifice fly as the Jayhawks dominated K-State, 17-7.

Afenir is the Jayhawks’ leading hitter in Big 12 play, posting a .370 average with seven doubles, five homers and 38 RBIs against conference foes.

He joins Tony Thompson (May 4) as the two position players honored with Big 12 weekly awards. Pitchers Shaeffer Hall (Feb. 23) and T.J. Walz (April 6), have also been named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week this season.

Nebraska righty Sean Yost was named this week’s pitcher of the week.

Afenir and the Jayhawks will face Sunflower Showdown rival Kansas State again on the first day of the Big 12 Baseball Championship. The Jayhawks and Wildcats will meet at 9 a.m., Wednesday at Bricktown Ballpark in downtown Oklahoma City. The game can be heard live on KLWN (1320 AM).
