Huskers Close Out Jayhawks, 4-2

Senior Dylan Parzyk hit his first home run of the season, while Wally Marciel pitched 6.1 strong innings, but it was not enough for KU. Jake Mort’s two-run double down the left field line in the top of the seventh proved to be the difference in Nebraska’s 4-2 triumph over Kansas Sunday at Hoglund Ballpark.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
The Jayhawks end the season at 28-30 overall and 9-17 in Big 12, while the Huskers improve to 29-23 and 14-13 in conference play.
Marciel, a freshman lefty from Kailua, Hawaii, walked the first batter he faced and then retired 12 of the next 13 batters he faced. The freshman did not allow a base hit until the sixth inning.
Meanwhile, his battery mate gave him a 1-0 lead. Parzyk, one of four seniors who played in his final game at Hoglund Ballpark Sunday, hit his first home run of the season on Senior Day. His solo shot to left gave KU the lead.
NU tied it in the sixth on DJ Belfonte’s one-out triple and Craig Corriston’s RBI ground out.
The Huskers took the lead on a controversial play in the seventh. With runners on first and second and one out, Marciel induced a foul pop out off the bat of Mort. However, a balk was called nullifying the play. Two pitches later, Mort doubled down the left field line to stretch the Nebraska lead to 3-1.
Trailing 4-1, KU cut the deficit when Kyle Murphy hit a one-out double to left and junior John Allman drove him in with a single through the right side of the infield. Allman, who went 1-for-4 in the game, finished with the team lead in batting average, edging Murphy .333 to .332.
The Jayhawks out-hit the Huskers 8-3 in the game, led by short stop Erik Morrison, who went 2-for-4.
Marciel went a season-high 6.1 innings, allowing three runs on three hits with five strikeouts. Junior Andres Esquibel allowed an unearned run in the final 2.2 innings.
