KU's Barbee Shoots 76 On First Day Of Golf Regional

SANTEE, Calif. – Kansas golfer Nate Barbee shot a four-over par 76 and is tied for 40th after the first round of the NCAA Southwest Golf Regional Thursday. Barbee is competing in the three-round event as an individual.

The top individual finisher not on a team which advances to the NCAA Tournament, will qualify for the national championship.

Eddie Olson of UNLV leads the individual race after carding a four-under par 68. He leads Timothy Madigan of New Mexico State by one shot. Four teams are tied for first place in Oregon, California, Tennessee and UNLV.

This season Barbee has averaged 73.50 strokes in the first round of tournaments, 70.60 in the second round and 71.45 in the third round.

Barbee will tee off at 11:50 a.m. Central time on Friday and is grouped with Jonathan Khan of Arizona and Justin Bardgett of Colorado.

The tournament is taking place at the Carlton Oaks Golf Course just outside of San Diego, Calif. Second round action will take place Friday with the final 18 holes scheduled for Saturday.

This season Barbee, a junior from Dakota Dunes, S.D., has posted eight top-10 individual finishes while leading the Jayhawks in scoring average at 72.12.
