ATHENS, Ga. –

Junior pitcher Serena Settlemier struck out 10 and hit her ninth home run of the season to lead the University of Kansas softball team to a 4-0 victory over Tennessee Tech Saturday at the UGA Softball Stadium. The Jayhawks (31-23) will face Georgia Tech in an elimination contest Saturday at approximately 4 p.m. CST.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

With the loss, the Golden Eagles are eliminated from the Athens Regional and end their season 35-28 overall. KU pitchers combined to strikeout 15 batters in the win.

Settlemier put the Jayhawks on the board in the top of the second with her second home run of the regional, a solo shot into the trees in left center. Settlemier then came out in the bottom half of the frame and struck out the side.

KU added a run in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead. Settlemier walked, advanced on walk by Elle Pottorf and moved to third on a fielder’s choice by Nettie Fierros. Fierros attempted to steal second and got into a rundown with TTU, allowing Settlemier to score before being tagged out.

The Jayhawks scored a run in the fifth and sixth on an error, base hit and two walks. Jackie Vasquez (singled) and Elle Pottorf (sacrifice fly) picked up RBI and gave KU a 4-0 advantage.

Settlemier (14-9) struck out 10, allowed just one hit and walked one in five innings for the victory. Kassie Humphreys struck out five, gave up two hits and walked one in two innings of relief.

TTU’s Bonnie Bynum (24-17) gave up five hits, struck out five and walked four in five innings for the loss. Sarah Street pitched the last two innings for the Golden Eagles.
