Battle Named Midwest Athlete of the Year

May 27, 2005

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas junior thrower Sheldon Battle has been named the Mondo Midwest Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year by the United States Track Coaches Association.

The Athlete and Coach of the Year awards are sponsored by Mondo, USA, the world’s largest supplier of track & field surfaces. Mondo was the official provider of all tracks and equipment for the Track and Field Competitions for the Athens Olympic Games.

Battle was named the 2005 Big 12 Outdoor Performer of the Year last week after winning the hammer and discus and finishing second in the shot put at the conference meet. He also regionally qualified in all three events.

“It is an award that is well deserving. Sheldon has put in a lot of effort this season and his numbers are very impressive,” Kansas head track and field coach Stanley Redwine said.

“It is a great honor for Sheldon and the University of Kansas,” Redwine added.

With the award, the Jayhawks have swept both the indoor and outdoor Midwest Male Athlete of the Year. Senior runner Jeremy Mims was the winner of the award during the indoor season.

Battle and the rest of the Jayhawks are competing at the 2005 Midwest Regional Championships Friday and Saturday in Norman, Okla.
