Kansas Men's Track Finish Third at Midwest Regional

NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Kansas men’s track and field team placed third at the 2005 Midwest Regionals, while the KU women’s team took sixth place in Norman, Okla., on Saturday.

Senior Jeremy Mims was the Jayhawks top men’s finisher. Mims took second-place in the 800-meters with a personal best time of 1:46.51.

Junior thrower Sheldon Battle, who won the shot put and the discus in Friday’s events, placed fourth in the hammer throw with a toss of 206-09. Battle will compete in all three events at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Freshman Julius Jiles rounded out his impressive freshman campaign with a seventh place finish in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.30.

On the women’s side KU picked up 14 points in the triple jump. Senior Brooklyn Hann took second place in the event with a best effort of 42-01.50, while freshman Crystal Manning jumped a personal best 41-03.75 to place third. That jump by Manning is good enough for fourth on the Kansas all-time outdoor list.

Sophomore Abby Emsick will move on to the NCAA meet with a fourth place, 170-01 effort in the discus.

The top five finishers in each event will move on to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Sacramento, Calif., June 8-11.
