LAWRENCE, Kan. – University of Kansas women’s basketball team will compete in the 2009 Junkanoo Jam on Grand Bahama Island. The event, scheduled for Nov. 26-28, is celebrating its seventh anniversary and the Jayhawks will be competing in it for the first time.

Kansas, playing in the Freeport Division of the 12-team tourney, will face Xavier in the opening round of action on Thanksgiving Day (Thursday, Nov. 26). The Jayhawks and Muskateers will tip-off at 3:30 p.m. (CST), with Minnesota and TCU playing at 10 a.m., on Friday, Nov. 27. On Saturday, Nov. 28, the two winners will meet at 2:15 p.m., with the consolation game being played at Noon.

The Junkanoo Jam consists of three separate tournament divisions. Each is a four-team, two-game championship/consolation format. In addition to the Freeport Division, the other two divisions are the Reef Division and Lucaya Division. The field for the Reef Division consists of UNC-Charlotte, South Dakota State, Indiana and Virginia, while the Lucaya Division fields George Washington, Michigan State, Oklahoma State and Marist.

Jayhawk fans wishing to attend the Junkanoo Jam can purchase packages via the Basketball Travelers website.

Kansas (22-14) returns eight letterwinners, including four starters from a team that advanced to the 2009 WNIT Championship game. Among the returnees for the Jayhawks is rising senior All-American candidate Danielle McCray, who finished the 2008-09 season ranked eighth in the NCAA in scoring with 21.6 points per game. KU will welcome six newcomers to the mix, in addition to 2008 WBCA High School All-American Angel Goodrich, who missed the 2008-09 season with an injury.
