NEW ORLEANS – The University of Kansas women’s track & field team checked in at No. 1 for the eighth time this season as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released its final rankings prior to the NCAA Outdoor Championships next week. The Kansas men took a big leap in the rankings, moving up to No. 15 as they head into the national meet in Eugene.

With 13 entries in the upcoming NCAA Championship meet, the Jayhawk women are in strong position with each of their competitors ranked within the top nine of their events, seven of whom are seeded in the top five. Though none are ranked No. 1 in their respective events, a number of Jayhawks have prior championships to their names, including 2013 indoor long jump/triple jump champ Andrea Geubelle (No. 3 and No. 2, respectively), indoor pole vault champ Natalia Bartnovskaya (No. 2) and 2012 indoor 400 champ Diamond Dixon (No. 5). Geubelle and Bartnovskaya headline a nation-best five NCAA Championship entries in the jumping events for Kansas.

On the men’s side, KU made its highest appearance in the USTFCCCA rankings since topping out at No. 12 in 2011. The Jayhawks jumped six spots to settle in at No. 15 this week, mostly due to career performances by pole vaulters Alex Bishop and Casey Bowen at last week’s NCAA West Preliminary. The KU men will see seven entries next week in Eugene, including senior Kyle Clemons (400m) and sophomore Michael Stigler (400m hurdles) who both sit in the top-five in their respective events nationally.

The Jayhawks will journey to historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., for the NCAA Outdoor Championships scheduled to run from June 5-9. Log on to KUAthletics.com for complete coverage throughout the week as both the Kansas men and women vie for team and individual titles.
