LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas golfer Chris Gilbert was among those recognized by the Golf Coaches Association of American as the Division I PING All-Region Teams were announced during the opening round of the 2013 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship Tuesday in Atlanta, Ga.

Gilbert birdied his final hole as a Jayhawk while securing his 12th career top-10 finish – five strokes off the lead – after shooting 73-72-73–218 (+2) at the NCAA Central Regional played at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark., last week. Gilbert closed the 2012-13 season with a 72.02 scoring average, the third-best by a Kansas golfer since the current records started in the mid-1980s.

“This honor is indicative of his performance throughout the entire year,” Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel said. “He was consistent, he was good, he won – he did a lot of good things for us. Most importantly to me, he improved throughout the year. It seemed like he kept getting better, he grew as a person, got a more and more confidence, and played really well down the stretch. That was exciting to see.

“One of his goals that we talked about all year was to win, and he won twice. It’s pretty impressive to win twice in one year, and it’s also impressive to be named to an All-Region Team as well.”

The senior from Simi Valley, Calif., won his first career tournament to close the fall season at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate where he shot back-to-back rounds of 68 (-3) en route to finishing 8-under and tied for first. Gilbert finished his spring season with a bang as well, carding another 68 (-4) in the middle of the Hawkeye Invitational while posting a 5-under 211 and another tie for individual medalist honors.

Gilbert was also in contention for the individual title until the final holes at the Big 12 Championship at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan., before he finished tied for 10th and on the Big 12 All-Tournament team.

Gilbert was the first Jayhawk to earn All-Region honors since Nate Barbee was recognized by the GCAA during the 2010 NCAA Tournament.
