KU's Gockel Is Medalist At WSGA Amateur Championship

ALBANY, Ga. – Kansas senior-to-be Meghan Gockel, shot a four-under par 68 to take medalist honors in the qualifying round of the Women’s Southern Golf Amateur in Albany, Ga. on Monday.

Gockel edged a trio of players, who each shot 69, and will be the top seed when match play begins on Tuesday. The Dallas, Texas native will meet Meaghan Green of Jacksonville, Fla. in the first round of the championship flight. Green shot a 76 in the qualifying round.

Gockel started her day Monday with a birdie and made two birdies on each nine en route to the best score of the 88 competitors vying for the 32 spots in the championship flight.

Gockel, who earned Big 12 All-Tournament honors this spring by tying for sixth at the league tournament, lost in the first round of this tournament a year ago when it was held in Kingwood, Texas.

The WSGA is conducting this tournament for the 94th time. The tournament is taking place at the Stonebridge Golf and Country Club, which measures 5,945 yards and plays to a par of 72.
