Gockel Advances In Southern Amateur Women's Golf Event

KINGWOOD, Texas – Kansas women’s golfer Meghan Gockel advanced into match play at the 93rd Women’s Southern Golf Association Amateur Championship on Monday.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

Gockel tied for 23rd place in the one-round stroke play on Monday as the top 32 finishers moved on to match play,which will run Tuesday through Friday. The event is taking place on the Island Course of the Clubs of Kingwood.

As a sophomore this past season, Gockel, a <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Dallas, Texas native, played in 18 of a possible 30 rounds for Kansas. She averaged 79.72 strokes per round with a top finish of a tie for 19th at the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational.

Three players shared medalist honors in the qualifying, including Calle Nielson of Nashville, Tenn., Eleana Collins of Pinehurst, N.C.a nd Sara Hemingway of Kingwood, Texas. The trio all shot 73.

The championship flight cut was at 82 with a playoff involving six players for one spot.
