Briscoe, Stuckey Lead Jayhawks On Phil Steele Preseason Teams

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas wide receiver Dezmon Briscoe and strong safety Darrell Stuckey were both named to Phil Steele’s Preseason Football All-America teams, while seven other Jayhawks dotted the magazine’s All-Big 12 teams it was announced on Tuesday.

Briscoe was tabbed to the magazine’s All-America Third Team, while Stuckey was listed on the fourth team. In addition to earning All-America honors, both Briscoe and Stuckey were named to the magazine’s All-Big 12 First Team.

Also on the All-Big 12 teams were second-team selections wide receiver Kerry Meier and punt returner Daymond Patterson, third-team choices running back Jake Sharp, offensive tackle Jeff Spikes, and defensive end Jake Laptad, and fourth-team picks defensive tackle Caleb Blakesley and punter Alonso Rojas.

Briscoe, a junior to be, set school records with 1,407 yards and 15 receiving touchdowns in 2008. Stuckey, a senior, was an All-Big 12 selection by the league’s coaches in 2008 after registering 98 tackles, five interceptions and seven passes broken up.

Meier, a senior, had a school record 97 receptions for 1,045 yards and eight touchdowns last year. Patterson, returned 22 punts for an 11.0 average and a touchdown as a freshman last season.

Sharp, a senior, rushed for 860 yards on the year after becoming the starter ahead of the conference portion of the season. Spikes, earned Phil Steele Freshman All-America Third Team honors after starting 13 games in his inaugural season in 2008. Junior Laptad stared the final six games of the year and led the KU defensive linemen with 38 tackles, while also recording 8.5 tackles for loss, including seven sacks.

Senior Blakesley anchored the interior of the defensive line and recorded 22 tackles with four for loss in 2008. Rojas, a junior, averaged 40.7 yards per punt, with 11 50-plus yard punts and 15 punts inside the 20-yard line.
