June 2, 2009
ALBANY, Ga. – University of Kansas women’s golfer Meghan Gockel won her first-round match at the Women’s Southern Golf Amateur in Albany, Ga. on Tuesday. Gockel entered match play as the top seed after shooting a four-under par 68 in the qualifying round on Monday.
Gockel, a senior to be at KU, defeated Meghan Green of Jacksonville 4 and 2 and will advance to play Carolyn Creekmore in the round of 16. Creekmore, who is from Dallas just like Gockel, won the 2004 USGA Women’s Senior Championship.
The tournament is taking place at the Stonebridge Golf and Country Club, which measures 5,945 yards and plays to a par of 72. Gockel lost in the first round of last year’s event, which took place in Kingwood, Texas.
