Mason Finley Named Midwest Region Field Athlete Of The Year

NEW ORLEANS, La. –

Kansas freshman Mason Finley was named the Midwest Region Field Athlete of the Year Friday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The winners of USTFCCCA Region Athletes and Coaches of the Year honors for the 2010 Outdoor Track & Field season in Division I were voted by the nation’s coaches.

Finley will compete at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships June 9-12 in both the shot put and the discus. He currently ranks third in both events entering the meet. His top mark on the season in the shot put is 19.26 meters (63-02.25 ft.), while his top mark in the discus is 60.18 meters (197-05 ft.).

Finley, a Salida, Colo., native, took home both titles at the 2010 Big 12 Outdoor Championships and was recently named the Big 12 Male Outstanding Freshman of the Year after being co-high point scorer honors from the conference meet.

A total of 18 Jayhawks, including Finley, will compete in 12 events at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore. Finley and junior Brian Bishop will kick things off for KU with the discus at 2 p.m. (PT), Wednesday, June 9.
